These spaces are strategically located in important mountains and surrounding landscapes and are organized around an entrance sculpture courtyard. Beyond the lobby is the “Glass House”, a second-level, more ambiguous living space with an indoor/outdoor feel, with operable glass on three sides, which connects the stone schist-covered lounge to the
A588 Gr. B weather resistant steel master bedroom.
The garage and living rooms are covered with local schist, just like the miners’ cottages nearby. The exterior of the two-bedroom house is covered with A588 Gr.B weathering steel, which refers to the rusted steel sheds and gold mine remains common in downtown Otago.
The house's attempt to be a background reaction has changed both the human occupation of the land over the past few centuries and the fascinating beauty of the wider natural landscape.
