Datong Art Museum-China's "21st Century Museum"-is one of the four new buildings of Datong New Town Cultural Plaza. Among the 32,000-square-meter venue, the most eye-catching is the Grand Gallery. This is a large-scale, well-lit exhibition space with a height of 37 meters and a span of nearly 80 meters. The space is flexible and efficient, and the service and structure are integrated. You can directly enter the gallery through a 40-foot articulated container truck to install large sculptures, stages and lighting equipment.
The shape of the building is connected by the vertices of four large pyramid-shaped roofs, giving the building a growth intention. The outer skin material is
corten steel (weathering steel), which has a clay color and is durable. One of these masses forms a brand new public square, this 32,000 square meter central square sinks slightly to harmonize with the surrounding building scale. Visitors enter the gallery through a sunken stepped
weathering steel sculpture park.
On the ground floor of the building is a huge exhibition hall with a 37-meter-high atrium. A net span of 80 meters provides the corten steel museum with a central area for large-scale installations and exhibits. Skylights on the high roof introduce north and northwest sky light to the exhibition hall, creating an excellent natural lighting environment for the artwork.
More exhibition spaces are set up around the museum, using the most advanced climate control technology. Children's galleries, group entrance lobbies, cafes, restaurants and auxiliary spaces are arranged around the sunken courtyard to introduce daylight. The Datong Art Museum was opened to the public in 2013. It also represented China in the exhibition "Beyond Architecture" in the Basel International Art Tour.
